IS SPM RIGHT FOR YOUR COMPANY?
SPM fits an owner who wants the finance side done for them and about five hours a month of their own time. The core client is a commercial subcontractor or self-performing GC doing $1M to $12M. SPM also takes residential, union, prevailing wage and public work, and larger contractors. SPM works alongside your CPA and never replaces one, can replace or retool an internal bookkeeper and does not work alongside another fractional CFO. SPM is not a CPA firm and does no payroll.
Most of the questions a contractor asks before a first call are about their setup: they have a CPA, or a bookkeeper who has been there ten years, or they tried a fractional CFO last year and it did not work. None of those rules SPM out, and one of them changes how the engagement starts. This page answers each one directly so you know before the call whether it is worth twenty minutes.
WHAT IT MEANS.
SPM is the finance function for commercial subcontractors and self-performing general contractors doing $1M to $12M, done for the owner every month: bookkeeping, job costing, WIP, cash forecasting and a monthly meeting that ends in written decisions.
The test for fit is a short one. Do you want the numbers handled for you every month, and do you want job costs that tie back to how you estimate? If yes, the rest is setup. If what you want is payroll, tax filing or an audit, SPM is the wrong call and the questions further down say so.
THREE OWNERS THIS IS BUILT FOR.
A $1M to $12M commercial subcontractor or self-performing GC
The company is past the point where the owner can hold the numbers in their head, and too small to justify a full-time controller and CFO. That is the size range the pricing, the job cost structure and the monthly cadence were built around.
An owner who does not want to learn accounting
The owner wants to run crews and bid work and to know, once a month, which jobs earned what and when cash gets tight. The engagement is built around about five hours a month: one meeting and approvals.
A company with a CPA and nobody running job cost
The tax return is filed and the books are accurate, yet nobody can say what a finished job made or forecast the next thirteen weeks. That is the piece SPM adds.
HOW IT WORKS IF YOU ALREADY HAVE...
SPM works alongside your CPA and never replaces one. The CPA keeps the tax return and compliance work. SPM keeps the job cost record, the monthly close and the forecast, and the two share the same books.
SPM can replace the role or keep the person. Many clients keep them and move them to payroll and office management, or leave the reconciliations with them. SPM builds and runs the job costing, because that is usually new to them and it decides whether the rest of the numbers are useful.
SPM does not work alongside another fractional CFO, and it replaces a lot of the ones that failed. The usual cause is advice built on books nobody had structured to the job, or reports that came too late to act on. SPM starts with the job cost structure and a close by the 10th, then adds the CFO layer on top.
SPM serves this niche and knows the government side of it. Wage determinations, fringe treatment and worker classification are built into the job cost structure. Certified payroll reports are produced by a payroll partner and SPM does no payroll itself.
SPM takes residential contractors and does not market to them specifically. How the job costing is built depends on how many projects you run and how you want to track them: a service based method for high volume work, or a long term project method for larger builds.
SPM takes contractors larger than $12M and does not market to them, since many have their own finance team. The pricing page publishes bands above $12M so growing clients can see where they fall, and the largest are quoted individually.

You stop guessing.
You get the CFO work. Job costing built against the way you estimate, a 13 week cash forecast, monthly WIP, and a meeting every month that ends in decisions and never in a report.
Your bookkeeper still does the books.
You stop touching the books.
Everything in Core, and we run the bookkeeping and the controllership as well. Your office stops answering coding questions and stops chasing a reconciliation on the last day of the month.
We do the books. No payroll.
Every job shows its margin while it's still running.
Everything in Executive, plus the job costing and WIP platform set up, loaded with your cost codes, and managed for you every month. You never have to learn it.
We do the books, the job costing, and the software. No payroll.
